Sexual and reproductive health

Good sexual and reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the capability to reproduce, and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so.

To maintain one’s sexual and reproductive health, people need access to accurate information and the safe, effective, affordable and acceptable contraception method of their choice. They must be informed and empowered to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections. And when they decide to have children, women must have access to services that can help them have a fit pregnancy, safe delivery and healthy baby.

Every individual has the right to make their own choices about their sexual and reproductive health. UNFPA, together with a wide range of partners, works toward the goal of universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, including family planning.

UNFPA Tanzania supports government to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights remains at the very centre of development. Our priority areas include:

We work in support of government, with partners, to strengthen health systems to reduce preventable maternal and child mortality and morbidity by improving access to: voluntary family planning to avoid unintended pregnancy; quality maternal and child health services that deliver skilled care during delivery; and rapid access to quality emergency obstetric and newborn care.

We are equally committed to supplying reproductive health commodities and other life-saving medicines, so that more women and men have access to family planning and other reproductive health services. Through the UNFPA Supplies programme, we increase the availability of reproductive health supplies, including voluntary family planning and life-saving maternal health medicines, and bolster logistics systems to ensure reproductive health commodities are available to the people of Tanzania wherever they live and whenever they need them. Support to the coordination of a comprehensive national condom programme is also a core strategy to increase access to voluntary family planning information and services.

We advocate for the integration of sexual and reproductive health services, including voluntary family planning and cervical cancer screening services, into HIV and AIDS service delivery platforms to meet the reproductive health needs of individuals and couples living with HIV.

We support the delivery of equitable and age-appropriate adolescent and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services to prevent teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections and HIV.

We recognize innovation as an indispensable engine to accelerate progress to deliver on global development aspirations, and have scaled up innovative solutions to deliver life-saving maternal, newborn and child health services for rural women of Tanzania.

Our Innovator’s Accelerator gives the young entrepreneurs of Tanzania an opportunity to develop solutions to address their sexual and reproductive health challenges, including those living with disabilities – some of the furthest behind.
